Freelancer rate calculator
Turn a target annual figure in rand into a daily and hourly rate. The year uses South African weekdays and public holidays. Tax is a rough estimate from the same individual tables as the PAYE calculator.
Public holidays come from the Public Holidays Act for the calendar year. Tax uses the SARS individual tables for 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027. The inputs are not stored.
How to use it
- Enter the annual amount you want, and whether that figure is before tax or after the rough income-tax estimate.
- Set leave, sick days and the share of days you will not bill. Expenses are added on top of the target.
- Quote the daily rate before VAT. If you are VAT registered, the inclusive figure is shown separately and is not extra income.
Questions
- Does this include UIF?
- No. A sole proprietor does not pay employees’ tax or UIF on drawings. If a company pays you a salary, use the PAYE calculator for that salary.
- Which holidays are removed?
- Weekdays that are public holidays under the Public Holidays Act for the year you enter. Extra gazette holidays are not included.
- Is the rate a quote I should send to a client?
- It is a planning figure. It ignores retirement contributions and other deductions, and it is not tax advice.
